I found this article very tantalizing to my interest and background in Information Security and Marketing. The author Larissa Harris a graphic designer and web designer amongst other trades of hers starts out with a very strong and true statement to intrigue her readers. The fact that social media has become so popular in the last decade and is becoming a advertisement dumping ground for companies is very significant. She has great points to actively advertise on social media sites such as having a plan, following the right people, learning the tools, and being active in your updates. I myself do this running a few pages for my unit’s organization and my church. One addition she should have made in this is describing how much advertisement revenue these companies get from their sites. For instance USA Today wrote in an article from 2008 about social sites bringing in pure revenue from advertising some of these sites are posted below keep in mind this data is from 2008. (Swartz, 2008)

· MySpace - $700 to 800 million in advertising

· Facebook- $440 million within its fourth year of existence

· LinkedIN – Recently open its IPO valued at 9 Billion FY11 1st quarter numbers will give the details.

These are just some of the big player in the last few years. AS you can see the numbers speak for themselves and should have been included in this article.

As the author continues there is less emphasis in the tools which should have had more detail considering their value in marketing. Most social media sites will produce reports that you can access to track how people are reacting. Facebook also has tools that will give you demographic statistics in your followers. This I think should have been a critical element in her report that she should have included when she talked about learning the tools.
