Checkpoint: The Official Language Movement

The First Article I read was about making English the official state language. The latest news is that there was a ballot prop going on in Oklahoma to make English the official state language. This is a perfect sample of laws being driven by frustrations with the federal response to illegal immigration going on in The United States. Oklahoma is the 35th state to make English the official state language in The United States. In recent years history has shown us that the legislation to make English the official language has greater popularity because at this time there is a huge Immigrations debate going on. In 1986, 1996 and 2006 Congress of The United States has immigration bills come thou. In the years the bills went to Congress the support emerged for laws to be making the English the official language at state and federal levels. When the Republicans took control of the issues “Speaker of the house Newt Gingrich” brought it to the forefront more than any other in Senate or Congress person would. The vote in 1996 was 259 to 169 in favor of the making English the official language, but it sat in the hands of the senate and time lapsed on the bill.

The Second article I read was about opposes bilingualism as a component of education. The article discusses that English should be the primary and only language taught in schools, also it is wanted for English language to be the only language supported. Jon Carroll is in much favor of honoring cultural traditions; he thinks that monolinguals’ is the fastest way for people to learn the English language. Much view that the problem The United States has is that there is no general agreement on what we as a country wants in our school programs. If other languages were the issues, then Jon Carroll would 100% support bilingualism. This...
