Influence of Professional Values and Ethics on Career Success
Values, social and religion are necessary to produce and maintain a civilized society. Honor, honesty, charity, trust, cooperation, dependability allow individuals to create and live peacefully in society. A breakdown of values leads to chaos. People who do not trust each other and are not honest with each other will fail as a free society. Ethics are a theory of moral values, and the choice between right and wrong. In other words, follow the golden rule of do unto others as you would have them do unto you. All people in positions of business, education, and service must practice and adhere to a rule of ethics.
Professional values and ethics can come from numerous sources. Family, religion, social groups, friends, academic integrity, and personal values, are directly related to societal professional values. All these different sources have a direct hand in teaching one to be honest, trustworthy, responsible, and to carry oneself in a respectable way. Those are the same values and ethics needed in a professional setting. Several professional sources exist to help ensure and maintain professional values and ethics with specific lines of work just in case an individual was to have a lack of better judgment. On a state level, lawyers have the state bar, certified public accountants have the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), doctors have the American Medical Association (AMA) and businesses have the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
Regardless if in a personal, professional or academic setting there are general behavioral expectations, but regardless the situation, behaving in an ethical way is what sets individuals apart from the rest.
