Abstract (Summary)

The game of baseball is woven into the fabric of American history. Baseball and apple pie, now that’s American. The game is known as the “Great American Pastime.” Today that pastime has been tarnished by the use of steroids.

Steroids are damaging but compared to hardcore drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and meth, they really are that bad. I mean you don’t really hear of anyone robbing a gas station to buy steroids. Some of the questions that have been raised by fans are what should be done to restore the veracity of the game? Should tougher testing for steroids be administered? These are some of things fans are concerned about. But one final question remains to be answered and that’s how does this affect the game?

Introduction

As American as apple pie, is the game of baseball. It is known as the Great American Pastime. Kids and adults from all over the US love to play the game or head to the field to watch nine innings. The Babe said “Baseball was, is and always will be to me the best game in the world.” His love for the game was evident in the words he used to express how he felt about the game. Babe Ruth also said “I won't be happy until we have every boy in America between the ages of six and sixteen wearing a glove and swinging a bat."

Today baseball has been plagued with the use of steroids. We watched the testimonies of players and sports trainers during congressional hearings on this very subject. The integrity of the game has been questioned. If players are bulking up on steroids or performance enhancing drugs, then how can you consciously say that they broke world records set by historically great players who did not use any of these types of drugs? So the question could be raised, are players during this steroid era deserving of being in the hall of fame if they used performance enhancing drugs to reach such a status? Without a positive drug test, how would the fans even know if drugs were actually...
