Executive Summary

Qantas is an airline business company that has been in operation for more than 90 years now. The airline which has an impeccable safety record has been regarded as one of the safest airlines in the world. It is based in the Australian region where it dominates the domestic market. The company has two major airline brands namely Qantas and Jetstar, a subsidiary. In 2008, Alan Joyce was appointed as the new CEO of the company. Since his appointment, he has made drastic changes in the airline as he seeks to implement his vision for the company.

Some of the changes he has made include sacking employees including top managers of the company as he strives to reduce costs, canceling a major merger deal between Qantas and British Airways as well as eliminating the first and business classes in some of the company’s flights. Critics have judged his actions harshly but these actions have helped to improve the performance of the company. The aviation industry is facing a difficult time due to the global downturn and Qantas continues to get affected in terms of operations and performance. The management of the company has however implemented strategies that are more focused on the future than at the present. These strategies aim at placing the company in a better recovery position once the global market condition starts to improve.
