I. Executive Summary

An analysis was performed to determine the fuel efficiency of the minivan versus the fuel efficiency of the modern sport utility vehicle. The null hypothesis states that the SUV’s are more fuel efficient vehicles than the average of minivans combined. We were able to collect data from the US EPA guidelines, the NHTSA- National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, of vehicles broken down by manufacturer, model, vehicle type as well as size. This study incorporates the average engine size, with example of V6 engines as well as using examples from V8 engines. We used several different model types and manufacturers so that we may get a median of descriptive statistics to do a thorough analysis. The alternative hypothesis is that minivans tend to have a better median of gas mileage per engine than the average of the median gas mileage of SUV’s. Our results show that we can reject the null hypothesis with a 95% confidence level. So on average minivans tend to get better mileage per vehicle than SUV’s.

II. Introduction

We chose to do a descriptive analysis on these two vehicles because they are both seen to in the public eye to be gas guzzlers unless you are buying a hybrid vehicle. Typically, buying a hybrid vehicle raises the cost substantially so the overall savings that the average person would’ve seen in negated because you spent thousands of dollars on the hybrid vehicle than you would have on buying the base model on that given vehicle. Forbes magazine did a sample study comparing the two vehicles and found that beneath their glossy new veneers, minivans are still about transporting large groups of children and groceries, and with typically better fuel economy than comparably sized SUVs . This might explain why, as gas prices go up, SUVs purchases are down, while...
