Chapter 10: ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE
INTRODUCTION
No matter how hard they try, companies can no longer afford the choice of whether or not to change. Companies must change in order to survive. However, it is not easy to change an organization and/or individuals in the organization. They must learn the subtleties of change. Change may be driven by economic, social and environmental factors, and/or business trends. To remain competitive, organizations must be able to quickly change. Change management is the application of knowledge, tools, and resources to leverage the benefits of change. Further, change management is the adapting and defining of corporate strategies, structures, procedures and technologies to deal with changes from external and internal conditions. We will first take a look at the characteristics of change management and four types of organizational change, along with insights about the nature of organizational change. We will next consider forces involved in organizational change, stages of the change process, resistance to change, and ways to reduce resistance. Three theoretical models of change will be considered: Lewin, Lussier, and Kotter. Last, we will consider organizational development, organizational climate, and organizational culture.
