Staffing is a major role that is vital to Human Resource Management (HRM). Kaiser Permanente is a large organization consisting of 35 hospitals and 431 medical office buildings in nine states and the District of Columbia. Kaiser goal is the well being of there members therefore, with 180,600 employees and physicians serve the needs of 8.6 million members. Kaiser consists of alternative work arrangements are methods of staffing other than the traditional hiring of full-time employees (Noe, 2007). Employees are hired external, internal, through agencies for part time use and some physicians are per diem. It is essential that HRM is ensuring that the right people, with the right skills and tools, are performing the right tasks, at the right time.

A vital part of developing a functional staffing plan is to clearly define the roles and responsibilities of the jobs that need to be filled. Kaiser utilizes there online resource to post all open position for external and internal candidates. The postings include description of the job, essential functions, qualifications basic and preferred, Primary Location, Scheduled Hours, Shift, Working Days, Working Hours Start, Working Hours End, Public Department Name, Travel, Job Eligible for Benefits and more. Hospitals work off a different staffing plan. Staffing plans and reports are determined based on patients needs. Hospitals have different units such as Intensive care, Emergency Room, Medical surgical, Psychiatric Services, Telemetry Unit, Pediatrics, Neonatal Intensive Care and many others. A unit is not only defined by the number of caregivers included in the team, but by the carefully chosen members of each team depending upon the needs of each patient and the unit overall (PatientCareLink, 2011) Each unit consist of its own staffing plan and each plan consist of how many RNs physicians are needed.
