Advanced Topics in Biology biot

□ Animal Behavior: sexual selection, kinship, aggression, play, communication, and learning in animals

□ Bioethics: studying controversial topics such as stem cells and cloning

□ Conservation Biology: Human impact on the environment and examining possible solutions

□ Microbes and Society: The study of diseases, the impact on humans, and bioterrorism

□ Pharmacology: Drugs and how they affect the human body and society

Homework: Homework will be assigned on a daily basis. Students must bring to class either a composition book or notebook for note taking and in-class assignments. It is recommended that students file their homework, classwork, and lecture notes in a 3 ring binder specifically for biology. You will have several major projects this year. Small projects and papers will be assigned throughout the school year. A calendar of all due dates will be posted in the classroom and on the class link on whitneyhs.org; it is recommended that all due dates be copied down in your planners at the beginning of each week. Problems with technology will not be accepted as an excuse for late work. Should you need to use multimedia for an assignment, it is your responsibility to load and test-run your assignment the day before it is due.

Testing:

Tests will be given regularly. The best way to prepare for exams is to keep up with your readings (very important!), take coherent, organized notes, and participate actively in group discussions. If you must miss an exam, please call or email me, as soon as you know you will be absent, to schedule your make up.

Lab Regulations: Advanced Topics in biology is lab based course. Students should be extra cautious when using equipment and follow all instructions.
