Introduction

The aim of this written portfolio is to discuss a field of employment and the employment prospects in it. Section one is to discuss the employment field. The field of employment which is going to be discussed is the management field. Section two is to discuss the two advertisements. Two advertised posts by two different companies in this field were chose. The two companies are the Cathay Pacific Airways and the Unilever. Section three is the language analysis. This section is to analyze the language used in the job advertisements and other company literature. Section four is a written application for the “Management Trainee” of the Cathay Pacific Airways. Finally, the advertisements posted by the two companies are attached.

Section One: A discussion of the management field

Watson (1994) identifies three ideas about management. Firstly, he defined management as a function, which means management is to steer or direct an organization. Secondly, management is a set of activities, these activities are to carry out in order to steer and direct the organization. Thirdly, management is a team of people to carry out the activities in order to steer and direct the organization in order to achieve the goals of an organization (Grey, 2004, p. 365).

There are two mainstream management and organization theories to interpret the nature of management. The first theory is by Fayol. Fayol mentioned the five functions of management, which represent the managing behavior in organizations:

“ Planning: Thinking before taking action.

Organizing: Arranging for material and personnel resources.

Coordinating: Setting up the policies and procedures that govern worker

behavior.

Commanding: Motivating and directing the efforts of the workforce in pursuit of

the organization's plans.

Controlling: Monitoring and correcting progress toward the organization's goals” (as cited in Stroh, 2002, p. 8).
