Business planning is a very complicated process because a company has influences from both internal and external factors. Legal constraints, business stakeholders, and risk management play a huge role in the positive and negative effects on a company. Corporations have a responsibility to fulfill the expectations from employees, consumers, and suppliers. Various constraints can dictate or inhibit certain actions. Internal and external stakeholders are also greatly affected by the successes or failures of the organization. Bateman and Snell explain, "Collaborating with key stakeholders will often be a significant factor in helping organizations successfully execute their strategic plan" (Bateman & Snell, 2009, p. 145). Boeing, the world’s leading aerospace company, has a long tradition of leadership and innovation and with that Boeing also deals with factors such as economic conditions, laws, and competition that have a direct influence on the strategic, tactical, operational, and contingency of their planning. Boeing combats factors that also influence the company from legal issues, ethics, and corporate social responsibility. Boeing has maintained success through their strong structure of ethics and business management planning.

Legal Issues

Legal issues are a constant battle for any company. Success through this process can be attributed to the planning process. On various occasions the Boeing Company has been involved in high profile discrimination cases that resulted in class action lawsuits. In 1999, Boeing agreed to pay 3,600 African Americans $14.2 million to settle pay-and-promotion discrimination charges without admitting any liability. This case involved high profile civil rights activist who showed up in support of the plaintiffs.
