Paul Crabbe enters the text as a “skinny, unathletic and irredeemably smug”. He is a highly intelligent individual but he lacks many social skills and general interaction with others is mostly strained. This personality stems from being an only child, not being used to banter with siblings, but thrust into an adult realm early on. He is forced to mature, despite being babied by his traditional parents. Also his experience with music has given him a keen interest to learn in all aspects of academia, the piano in particular. We often respond to him critically, as his behavior is frustrating and we do, as readers, want to see him succeed. As a result of this, when he fails at his dreams of becoming a concert pianist, we do start to react more sympathetically towards Paul.

Keller is particularly enigmatic, his reclusive nature leads many to draw conclusions about his history and personality. Undoubtedly talented, even gifted, though he shows no shred of exhibitionism or arrogance in regard to his own abilities. Although modest, he lacks the ability to compliment or praise and encourage others, mostly criticising and putting down others. A cultured European, he enjoys his schnapps like Australians enjoy beer, often times in copious amounts. A bitter individual, he frequently uses this liquid poison to subdue his depression. Also indulging in other people stupidity and misfortune in an attempt to suppress his hardships. His wife and son’s death in the war lead Keller to feel intensely ashamed and constantly blame himself for not saving their lives. We respond to Keller critically initially due to his critical attitude, but as we learn more about his past we finally see him in a sympathetic light.
