ABSTRACT

This paper will evaluate how a new Smartcard ticketing system is aligned with the overall business goals of Transport for NSW. Furthermore, how the technology will be used, and how this system will strategically position the NSW State Government and Transport NSW. In this paper a comparison will also be conducted between London's Oyster Card and how many of its features will be included in the new Opal Smartcard system here in NSW.

INTRODUCTION

New South Wales has recently changed governments and the new administration has brought with it many ideas and solutions to address the growing problems that face NSW, regarding its infrastructure and transport systems. These issues the previous State Government attempted to resolve in part with the T-Card system, an information technology solution to help reduce the problems facing the transport system. This however failed in 2007 (Clennell 2007) resulting after years of delay, a $64 million bill and lawsuits against the company rolling out the system, Vix Technology part of the ERG Group. NSW Government had promised commuters a ticketless transportation system by the 2000 Olympic games (Benson, 2008) and to this date have failed to deliver. For NSW to have an efficient, reliable and simple transport system, Transport NSW will have to employ and implement new information systems into its existing framework.
