Globalization

Globalization can be described as the interaction and exchange of ideas and customs between cultures. This has had a great impact on women across the world, both positive and negative. One of the largest positive effects on women is increased paid employment which is one step closer to equality in the workforce. Along with increased pay is an increase in job availability for females in factories and other domestic work. Although the jobs in itself are low paid and tend to have worse conditions, they are an opportunity for the female to support her family by bringing home a little more money.

Another positive impact of globalization is the empowerment of women by giving them financial independency, especially if their portion of the family income is significantly high. The last positive impact is women’s empowerment through the organization to combat the negative effects of globalization. This has given women a common cause and reason to unify and fight for female rights.

Some negative affects of globalization, along with domestic jobs in the workforce, is forced prostitution in sexual tourism. Many women turn to prostitution in poorer countries just to make money and support their household. “It arises out of a globalized economy that makes sex work one of the only ways for some women to earn a living” (Burn 178). The last negative effect of globalization is the increased employment of sweatshops. Women must work for low pay in businesses that violate wage, child labor, and safety standards due to the low job availability for women.
