CEO’s and their Ethical Responsibilities

Ethics is the code of moral principles and values that governs the behaviors of a person or group with respect to what is right or wrong (Daft, 2010, p. 130). As humans we all have an obligation to follow an ethical code. There is a code of ethics for students, business people, teachers, lawyers, doctors, and even Chief executive officers (CEO’s). While I explain the different code of ethics that people face and must follow every day, I hope you can look at your own ethical responsibilities.

Why should we follow a code of ethics? Everyone has heard of the saying, “treat others the same way you would want to be treated”. This saying is true in every aspect of my life, as a mother, a wife, a student, and an employee. As a mother I have an ethical obligation to treat each of my children equally and to maintain a healthy, loving, learning environment for each of them. As a wife, I made a commitment to my husband to be faithful and to always be there for him. As a student, I have an ethical responsibility to not cheat, not plagiarize, and to always maintain honesty. Finally, as an employee, I have a responsibility to do my job at my greatest ability, not to lie on my resume and other documents, and not to steal from the company.

Now that we have discussed how ethics are a part of everyone lives, we can look at the dilemma that was stated in the You-tube video. To begin we will look at some of the information that was provided by the Speaker of the video. Lawyers are subjected to an International Bar Association (IBA) (TantanXXXXXXX, 2006, 3:03). The IBA has an ethics committee which enforces the standards of ethical conduct of lawyers. Doctors report to a World Medical Association (WMA) (TantanXXXXXXX, 2006, 3:03).
