Compare and contrast packet and circuit switching

Packet switching A WAN switching method that allows you to share bandwidth

with other companies to save money. It operates by taking messages and dividing

them into packets before they are sent. Each packet is then transmitted individually

and can even follow different routes to its destination. Packet switching is good for

bursty data transfers but is not as good for constant data transfer. Examples include

Frame Relay and X.25.

In packet switching methods, messages are broken into small parts called packets.

Each packet is tagged with source, destination, and intermediary node addresses as appropriate.

Packets can have a defined maximum length and can be stored in RAM instead

of on a hard disk. Packets can take a variety of possible paths through the network in an

attempt to keep the network connections filled at time. However, because the message is

broken into multiple parts, sending packets via different paths adds to the possibility that

packet order could get scrambled. Therefore, a sequencing number is added to each

packet.

Packet Switching Advantages I believe would be the Security,Bandwidth used to full potential, Devices of different speeds can communicate, probolay not affected by line failure (rediverts signal) ,Availability do not have to wait for a direct connection to become available, During a crisis or disaster, when the public telephone network might stop working, e-mails and texts can still be sent via packet switching

A few Packet switiching Disadvantages I believe would be Data packets can get lost or become corrupted and Under heavy use there can be a delay.

Circuit switching Circuit switching sets up a line like a phone call. No data transfers

before the end-to-end connection is established. Examples include dial-up

modems and ISDN lines.

The telephone message is sent in one go, it is not broken up. The message arrives in the same order that it was originally...
