Abstract

This study will examine the cause and effect of procrastination on the lives of those who suffer from it. I will determine the causes of my own plague of procrastination and determine the best course of action to take to reverse it.

Introduction

Each one of use procrastinates from time to time, but only 20% of us are considered chronic procrastinators (Psych Basics “Procrastination” n.d.). Chronic procrastinators have mastered the ability to justify why something can or should be delayed, often deciding ultimately they cannot begin a task due to external forces beyond their control. Procrastination is a learned behavior and can be difficult to overcome. It can have extreme consequences, causing loss of friendships and financial distress. Steps to overcome procrastination can seem daunting and overwhelming to the procrastinator thus being avoided. I consider myself to be a chronic procrastinator. I will but things off until the absolute last possible minute and have grown accustomed to this behavior. It is a burden I carry everyday and have yet put forth the effort to correct it. I am sincerely hoping to one day be a woman of action and least my burden behind.

Information

The research I did for this study was done primarily on the internet and in the many books I have on the subject. To possibly help me understand procrastination, its root causes and possible cures I gathered information pertaining to both.

Causes

There are numerous causes of procrastination and each individual may suffer from any one of them at any given time. A few of the major causes for me are disorganization, perfectionism, and anxiety.

Disorganization is a major issue for me. I have a small house and not enough space to store the things that we need. An argument could be made here whether I should downsize the amount of things we do have or to simply develop a better...
