Art is a Universal Language

Since the dawn of human civilization, art has been a medium through which to communicate ideas which cannot be communicated as easily through conventional means. Art provides a plane on which all can relate, due to its nature of impacting us on a deeper level. Thus, art is essential to the global world as it allows countless individuals, regardless of socio-economic or cultural background, to communicate clearly. Although two completely different people may not possess the ability to speak the same language, or understand each other verbally, art facilitates this communication and individuals may connect with each other as human beings, due to art’s role as an essential part of our being.

Art also contributes to the spread of ideas and thought. Theories and concepts may be mentally inaccessible to all but the most trained specialists, yet art allows the general public to grasp the general point that is trying to be made. Examples such as the philosophy piece Leviathan, by Thomas Hobbs, illustrate the idea that by using art as a form of communication, complex ideas may be spread to a general audience. Furthermore, great deals of musicians raise social issues and concerns in their music,

which allows knowledge of such topics to be communicated efficiently through the masses and raises public awareness of such matters. Although art may be interpreted differently by various individuals, its role as a communication tool in society is undeniable and is absolutely essential to cohesive global communication and the spread of new thinking.
