Memo: Avoiding cross-cultural miscommunication.

What is culture?

We have so many cultures in our world which are different in every single country. Many believe that culture is about the way oneself behaves, lives, values, and thinks. However, according to the author, a culture is values, attitudes, and behavioral factors and belief.

Culture’s component:

1. Values and Attitudes:

Values are all about what is right, wrong, good or bad. They are different when it comes to judgments or desirable in people’s thinking. Values are also about achievement or things which are worth to be accomplished. On the other hand, values also include ideas, belief, and customs. They are delivered in a way of honesty, responsible and faithfulness.

Attitudes are about the way people behave what people think about or evaluate things, objects around them. Attitudes can be formed positive or negative way. Attitudes will be different in every country because every country has different culture. Attitudes are more flexible than values. Under attitude, we have different attitudes such as attitudes toward work or attitudes toward time.

Attitudes toward work: there are countries which are dedicated to work such as Japan and Korea. Japanese and Korean think that their workplaces are their second home. They do not even think that they need time for leisure. However, in other countries such as Germany, United States, people know how to balance their lives. They know when they should work and when it is a family time.

Attitudes toward time: the concept about time is very different in every country. For instance, in America, Americans always follow their schedules strictly. They always try to save their time because they always think that time is very important. In America, it is a fast pace life. However, when it comes to Europe, it is quite different.
