The Use OF Force

Emotions can be a source of strength or weakness that can affect

someone's behaviour in their social role. In "The Use of Force", written by William

Carlos Williams , the author displays how the use of force can cause violence

when emotionally involved in a particular situation. The story indicates a lack of

obedience from the girl and self-discipline from the doctor.

The man's behaviour towards the girl emphasize the

difficulties people have separating emotions and standards. The fact that the doctor is

determined to help the young girl who makes every attempt to refuse help, may seem

like simple task, but when the outcome could be certain death, the main character

becomes to show heroic qualities. In a situation as this, it was important for the doctor to

be persistent for the girls own good. I feel that the doctor in the story is a normal

stressed out doctor with some self-control issues. Ialso showed that he is a person who

enjoys being a doctor, whereas some are only in it for the money. He seemed to have

deep regard about the child's health. However, the little girl got on his nerves when she

did not want to open up her mouth.

Furthermore, as any normal person would feel, the doctor enjoyed the feeling of insane

anger towards the child. When someone pisses you off it feels good to get them back in

some way; and that is exactly what the doctor did. On the contrary, at the same time he

was expressing his anger, he truly did want to help out the poor, ignorant, suffering girl

from the sickness she was hiding.

It is now easier to understand how social roles and personal

impulses get incorrectly mixed creating a disruptive work environment. A use of force

should be questioned to properly analyze a situation's requirements. Otherwise,

misconnects occur, like how many could have believed this short story carries...
