Exercise 15-3: Test Your Leadership Style

As a supervisor you must be able to improve the productivity of a team. Everyone is not motivated the same way. Supervisors need to consider their leadership style to establish the best way to enhance productivity and inspire different employees and teams.

I think it is very important to assess your leadership skills. A supervisor must be able to implement ways to be successful. One way to do this is by an employee opinion survey or questionnaire. An example would be the questions I completed that consisted of 25 questions. The choices of answers was either A or B. I had 18 A answers and seven B answers. The results showed me with 72% being a Leader and 28% as a Supervisor. I agree with my results. I am always trying to motivate and direct my team to reach the goal of the department. I want my team members to grow and develop with the company. At times I am too soft or patient when the team members lag in performance (Rue & Byars, 2004, p.272). These emotions sometimes interfere with my leadership skills; however, I must follow the company brand and best practices.

Strengths of being a leader has made me be able to increase the productivity of my department. Sometimes I think that the employees work harder when they feel that the leader faithfully believes in them and care about them. As a leader, I can increase productivity my conducting weekly or monthly huddles with the employees. It is important that the employees are kept abreast of company policies, sales, goals, and concerns of the department. I would inform them that sales and productivity are down and we need to brainstorm of ways to increase them. This is a good way to make the employees feel involved with the brainstorming process. This lets them know that as a team we are working together to make an improvement to come up with a mutual goal. We will consider each...
