Abstract The main aim of this report is to illustrate two completely different sides of new technologies. It will be explained how a new technology’s implementation could lead to a disaster while the resulted crisis also need new technologies to be managed appropriately. Deepwater Horizontal Oil Rig explosion has been considered as a case study to explain technology’s behaviors towards initiating a crisis and crisis management accordingly. It will be explained what technical and technology failures have been occurred and leaded the rig to the explosion. Secondly, the various effects of the explosion will be mentioned as well as the global reaction to this crisis. At the next step it will be reviewed how BP and US government have used new technologies and innovations to pass through this huge tragedy and what have been these innovations. The report found how human life has been affected by technologies and innovations. Finally the report will be concluded asking this question that considering all effects and results, weather it still worth to use new technologies

Introduction

BP (British Petroleum) p.l.c. (LSE: BP, NYSE: BP) is the third largest energy company (based on revenues) in oil and gas. BP’s headquarter is located in London, United Kingdom. Having 22,400 service stations and branches in more than 80 countries, BP produces 3.8 million barrels of oil equivalent daily. It also has a division as BP America which is the biggest producer in the US, Huston, Texas.

BP is one of the companies which has been always had debates and arguments in environmental, safety and political issues in its history, including the 1965 Sea Gem incident and the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The second and latest event (Deepwater Horizon oil rig) will be reviewed as a case study in this report.
