The Event from the 60’s That Influenced Me: The Civil Rights Movement

The Civil Rights movement in the 1960’s was a very powerful time period in this country.  Birmingham, Alabama was considered the heart of the struggle for equal rights. African- Americans protested and fought for what they believed in through peaceful and violent protests.

Throughout the 1960’s, the widespread movement for African American civil rights had transformed in terms of its goals and strategies. However, the campaign had intensified during this decade which was characterized by greater demands and more aggressive efforts.

Although the support of the Civil Rights movement was relatively constant, the goals of the movement became more high-reaching and specific, and its strategies became less compromising.

African- Americans’ struggle for equality during the 1960’s was a relentless movement that used change for progress. In essence, the transformation of the Civil Rights Movement throughout the 1960’s forwarded the evolution of America into a nation of civil equality and freedom (Friedman, 2008).  It makes me upset with the way this country treated African- Americans because they fought for something they believe in and will stop at nothing to earn what they deserve.  

As a person of color, my life would have been very different if this law had never been passed. Without the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it would still be legal for people to discriminate against me based on the color of my skin and it would be legal for a restaurant to refuse to serve me. 

It would also be legal for the local swimming pool to refuse me the opportunity to swim there.  Furthermore, it would have been legal for a business to reject hiring me based on my skin color.  If we could somehow imagine that the Civil Rights Movement had not worked and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 had not been passed, my life could have been a struggle of hardships from...
