I. Rationale

The rationale of this lesson is to guide students in learning the three main parts of plants: leaves, stems and roots, as well as their functions.

IV. Objectives/standards/adaptations

1. Students will be able to identify the three main plant parts.

2. Students will be able to describe the functions of the three main plant parts.

Standards:

S4.B.1.1.2: Compare similar functions of external characteristics of organisms (e.g., anatomical characteristics: appendages, type of covering, body segments).

V. Lesson Body

A. Anticipatory Set:

3. Have students look at a plant and name the parts they can see. Have them name parts that they can’t see and explain why they can’t see them.

4. “Today we are going to be learning about plant parts. Even though there are many different types of plants that all look different, they all have three main parts. Depending on where they grow, the parts may look different.”

B. Procedures:

5. To begin, go over class expectations. Explain to students that when someone is reading or answering, they should be the only one talking. Remind students that shouting out will result in a lost point. Make sure their desks are clear of distractions.

6. Have students open their books to page 50. Read “The Roles of Leaves and Stems.” Place 3 columns on the board labeled Leaves, Stems, and Roots. Have students fill in as much as they know about those plant parts.

7. Read “Leaves” on page 50. Have students add to their leaves list. Show the leaves on a couple different plants and have students look at...
