Question 1) What weere the U.S. Goals in Latin American intervention? What were the results? Answer Part A: The goals of the United States in Latin America can be summed up thusly: to stop communism at any cost. The monroe doctrine stated that the United States would “protect the interests of Latin America, using force if necessary.” These goals caused the US to support dictators and authoritarian leaders of countries who were “anti-communist”, despite the terrible practices these leaders used to stay in power. This policy has caused Latin America great political and economic instability, and also has created a lingering distrust of the United States's motives that continues today. Question 2) What led to the iranian & Afhanistan revolutions? What was the impact? Answer Part A: Iran 1. The Iranian revolution was caused by resentment of the Pahlavi family (who was in charge). The family seized power and their relationship with the US made the resentment worse. Corruption and inefficiency made matters even worse. Ayatollah Khomeini was the leader of the opposition. When the shah fled Iran, the Islamic Republic of Iran was but in place of the former monarchy. Although elections were held, not everyone could vote or run for office. Soon, strict measures were taken to follow the strict interpretation of the Q'aran. The United States had totally lost control of Iran and had created yet another enemy. Answer Part B: Afghanistan 1. When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to set up a proxy government, they had no idea the problems they would face. Fierce resistence from Afghan rebels coupled with United States weaponry and training eventually caused the USSR to withdraw.
