Employee assistance programs started back in 1970. The program is to provide a number of support programs for employees and families who experience substance abuse inside and outside the workplace. Employee assistance programs geared toward employees with work-related difficulties that have an impact on job performance, absenteeism, behavioral problems. Employers reducing intoxication, drug abuse, anger management, physical illness, depression, and anxiety in the workplace are the focus for Employees assistance programs when dealing with the employees. (2006) Over the years, Employees assistance programs realize the effects addicts put on his or her family, so programs designed for family members experiencing martial problems, daycare for children, and elderly care for guardian of employees. Some programs implemented for legal and financial assistance. Employee’s assistance programs are beneficial to the employees and the employers. Employers benefit because the programs and counseling reduce absenteeism, turnover, costs for medical benefits, lost-time accidents, improve efficiency, concentration, morale, increase production, and wellness of employees. Labor organizations benefits from counseling and employees assistance programs because it is a source to assist employees, and build relationships and positive interactions with employers, employees, and the unions.

Employee struggling with drug addiction should take advantages of employee assistance programs and member assistance programs. Elliott, K., & Shelley, K. (2005) The help is there when employee need it but do not seek because afraid of employer firing him or her. Employee assistance programs created to prevent dismissal. The program gives the resources and tools designed to help employees and members struggling with drug addiction and alcoholism.
