1. Introduction
The goal of this paper is to do a comprehensive written case analysis, where we (as a group of 3 students) will be analyzing all the important parts of a company’s strategic management. Attention will be given to the mission and vision statements, long-term objectives, strategies and a SWOT analysis will be conducted. Afterwards an analysis will be done to see weather objectives have been achieved and if strategies implemented have been effective. This all will be done for a local company of our choosing, which is Sagicor Capital Life Insurance Company Limited, and will be further referred to in this paper as “Sagicor”.
2. Background
Sagicor Group was established in Barbados in 1840 as The Barbados Mutual Life Assurance Society, when there was a much financial uncertainty. It was a time when the sugar plantation-based society of the West Indies was struggling with socioeconomic changes following emancipation in 1834. During 1849 – 1896, Sagicor expanded its operations in the Caribbean and branches were opened on most of the British Caribbean islands (such as: St. Vincent, Trinidad & Tobago, Grenada, Guyana, St. Kitts etc.). Sagicor was the only indigenous life insurance company to establish branches throughout the British Caribbean, with the largest operations and investments during the entire nineteenth and early twentieth century.
