Four Functions of Management

When it comes to working and being successful in a professional business environment, managers need to know the basic four functions of management. The job of the manager is to plan, organize, lead, and control. Managers use many different techniques to accomplish these functions. Without proper training and education, a manager cannot be successful in the operation of a business or organization.

The first and most important step of managing an organization or business is the planning step. With this step comes the knowledge of knowing how the business or organization is to be run. In order for a business organization to be successful, the manager has to be on top of planning, not just planning out a weeks worth of work, but planning out for an entire year. Within the organization that I work in, our manager needs to plan out all the training needs for all of the employees within the shop. Conflicts with training can cause an organization to be unsuccessful in meeting goals set out by the leadership. Another component of management involves recognizing the organization’s goals and developing strategies to achieve these goals ("Four Functions of Management", n.d). Planning is a never ending function for managers, whether it being the planning for a day or planning for the week. Situations will arise that call for more planning.

The second function of business management is referred to as organizing. This is the step that brings the people of a company or business together for many functions. Management must have all of the resources organized in order to execute actions within the business. These resources can include workers, monetary resources, or even products. With multiple departments working on similar projects, my management team needs to work in an organized manner.
