Physicians had many remedies for many different conditions. These remedies came from things like herbs, plants, and animals. Some of their remedies actually worked, for example, in the treatment of night blindness they used animal liver and today extracts of liver are still used (ancient Egyptian medicine smith ebers).

We have several papyri that have helped us to uncover ancient Egyptian medicine. A few of the most important papyri would include the Edwin Smith (dealing with surgical and trauma) and the Ebers (dealing with an assortment of medical knowledge). There are ten other papyri dating from around 1500 BC to 250 AD that helps us to understand medicine in Ancient Egypt. The Egyptian environment fostered a place of medical learning. It’s geography provided the time and security for the development of medical knowledge. It had a good supply of food because of the predictable flood pattern, and because of its natural borders it was not especially prone to outside invasion. Physicians played many roles in society.

Egyptians were not always the most hygienic and precautious people when it came to their health; but they did take some preventative actions.
