CASE 4: THE GLOBALIZATION OF CEMEX

1. Summary case

The development and growth of CEMEX from a small plant to be local and become a leader in the cement industry can be summarized in three stages. The first stage in the early 60's, the company is focused on being the main reference for the cement industry in Mexico, which have quickly achieved 30% market share for 1970. It’s in the second stage when the company changed its course and sought to reach positions for greater participation in other emerging markets, they began acquiring cement companies in different countries. Since the mid-sixties to the mid-eighties, CEMEX is distinguished by its growth that leads to becoming the market leader in Mexico. During this period, the company doubled its export volumes, begins trading on the MEXICAN STOCK MARKET, and expands its presence into central and southern Mexico. International growth is initiated since 1992, with the purchase of 2 large Spanish cement company “Cementos Valenciana” and “Sanson”, a Venezuelan company “Vencemos”. Cemex acquired in a few years later “Bayano of Panama”, built a cement plant in Texas (USA), acquired in the Dominican Republic “Cementos Nacionales”, acquired Cementos Diamante and Samper in Colombia and others. In the third phase seeks growth opportunity in European and U.S. markets In 2004, makes one of his biggest acquisitions with the purchase of RMC group with increased distribution channels and geographic expansion, including Europe, North America and Asia.

2. Main problem
