Organizational Change and Forces Prompting Change

Organizational change is any change that occurs in the work environment. Usually organizations change can reorganize the organizational systems and deal with the influences usual in the external environment of the organization (Nelson, 2009). A change occasionally is affected by renovation the internal systems of the organization. Changes within an organization can be described as a situation that emerges because of management decisions that have an effect on the workforce of the organization (Nelson, 2009). Every organization must change, not only to survive and succeed but also to maintain the business relevance in the world of intense competition, relentless technology process, and rapid communication. In order for organizational change to bring advancement and benefit the organization to a higher level of operation and service, and that change must be motivated by knowledge (Nelson, 2009).

An organization faces both planned and unplanned changes. These changes can be of incremental, transformational, and strategic nature. Planned changes are changes resulting from deliberate decisions to alter the organization (Nelson, 2009). Unplanned changes are changes imposed on the organization, and are often unforeseen. For example, organizations that wishes to move from a traditional hierarchical structure to help self-managed teams is a planned change, and government regulations and changes in the economy are unplanned changes (Nelson, 2009). Unplanned changes require tremendous response, adaptability, and flexibility by the organization. In addition, management must be prepared to handle both forms of changes in the organization.
