The Working stiff, what are they complaining about?
July 4, 1820
*This is the day were many of us celebrate our independence, though we are free from the English some of us are still under the thumb of power. We had the pleasure to talk to John Holmes, who works at a metal producing factory. I asked him to talk about some of the hard times that he has seen working in this place. He said “working here has helped make living a little more bearable” when I asked to elaborate he said “at least I have a job. I could be like so many out there who are looking for one.” I asked about the working conditions this is what he had to say “I have seen a lot of people getting hurt or dead in this place. It is worse for the kids that they have working here and also the woman. They get paid less and expected to work longer hours.” I was shocked to hear that information. He went on to say “It is a day like today that makes me thankful for being alive but I know tomorrow I will be my life back on the line for the rich people to get richer.” After I had talked to him I had a sense that my job was not that bad. I know he hopes that there will be a time when he does not feel like he is going to die but that will not come in his life time.
