The Scientific Method

Background.

Plants require light to grow. Plants store energy in their cells which in turn generate food and help them grow. The aim of this experiment is to show the importance of light as an important part of plant life. Light leads to the development of chlorophyll. This is used by plants to store energy during daylight. This is the energy that the plant will use to make food.

Hypothesis.

Plants need light in order for them to make food. It is important to grow plants in conditions that expose them to sunlight to ensure that they make their food.

The Procedure for carrying out the experiment.

The purpose is to find out why plants need light in order to grow.

➢ Collect ten standard pot plants that have plants already growing. This will allow for the testing to be effective as plants will have already shown growth levels. What has now to be seen is the impact that the light has on these pots.

➢ Number the pot plants from 1 up to 10 so that it becomes easier to identify them

➢ Take photos of the pot plants so that these can be used for comparative purposes.

➢ Place five pot plants in different parts of the garden and cover with black polythene paper bag and insert a tube to allow for watering of the plants. The plants will need the water to support their growth.

➢ Place the remaining five plants in different parts of the garden were they will continue to be exposed the sunlight these pot plants should remain uncovered.

Allow these plants to remain still for a period of about four weeks. This allows the plant enough time to register significant growth. These plants must be watered everyday during this period.

For the plants that are not covered, record the levels of growth, and during the weekly intervals, take photographs of the potted plants. Recording of the difference in height for the plants should be noted on a daily basis. The recording will provide the needed evidence to show the...
