Active Directory Information
Active directory is a network technology that can provide a variety of services to Riordan Manufacturing. The services that would be most beneficial include:
• Directory services: - Provides users with a home directory that they can store their files on. Each directory will be protected by a user name and password. (Reis, 07/2008)
• Authentication services: - This service can be used for checking user name and passwords on various applications. (Reis, 07/2008)
• Domain naming: - This service allows a page to be accessed by using a domain name. (Reis, 07/2008)
Active Directory Items
Objects: An object is a basic entity of active directory and includes any computer, server, printer, services and users. (Reis, 07/2008)
Site: A geographic location that contains a single network or a group of networks.
Trees: A tree is a group of objects, arranged in a hierarchal manner. (Reis, 07/2008)
Domain: A collection of organizational units. Each domain is identified by a DNS entry or domain name. (Reis, 07/2008)
Organizational units (OU): OU’s are containers of objects. Objects are classified within a domain as OU’s. (Reis, 07/2008)
Forests: A forest is a collection of trees in an active directory. (Reis, 07/2008)
Implementation for Riordan Manufacturing
Sites: Riordan Manufacturing contains 4 sites, which means that active directory will need to be setup at all four sites, with a central server at the San Jose site. [pic]
Forests: - There will be a total of four forests in the active directory, one for each site. Each forest will have a domain name.
Trees: - With each department of the company being a tree, there will be at least 5 trees at each site. Each tree will have a sub-domain name. The trees may also contain sub trees depending on the number and classification of users.
