Nutrition: Where Does Our Food Come From?

The average hamburger contains meat from around 100 different cattle. Cattle are treated extremely poorly throughout their life. From being fed other forms of meat, to being raised knee-deep in their own manure, cattle are put through physical abuse every day. Cattle aren’t the only victims in this situation either. The workers in the slaughterhouses are forced to keep quiet about any injuries they receive, and can only take a leave of absence when they injury is preventing work. Even though The USDA truly believes they are doing everything they can to protect Americans, all they seem to care about are is the profit they are bringing in. In reality, the USDA is corrupt and our food has gone from being healthy to in fact hurting the consumer’s bodies due to the food that is being fed to the animals. The unhealthiness of the animal feed is then transferred to consumer’s bodies and thus causing several cases and reports of the FDA taking monetary bribes to keep quiet about the contaminated meat being made available for human consumption.

The common conception of chicken farm is chickens roaming free around a barn, eating corn and grain; but in reality, chickens are forced into big houses with no light and no room to move. To accommodate the large demand for chicken, farmers are forced to build two or three houses, putting themselves in debt and forcing them to upgrade these chicken houses so the chickens can mature faster instead of giving the chickens a better way of life. These farmers go into $100,000-$500,000 dollars in debt just by providing housing for the chickens. The result of this form of living on the birds is extreme stress, disease, high mortality rates, filthy conditions, fouled air, choking ammonia, and occasionally extreme cruelty from the farmers.
