Ethical and Moral Issues In Business Paper

We as people in the workforce will experience all types of situations that will bring into based solely on what those beliefs are. I was brought up in the church and it was instilled in me at a very young age to know right from wrong. In this paper I would try my best to explain the difference between ethical issues and moral issues, and the difference between personal ethics and business ethics. A number of recent reports show the American consumer is increasingly demanding businesses to be run with honesty, integrity and sound business ethics. By using my job, I will give examples of common ethical problems within a work place.

I’m currently employed with FCI Edgefield which is a federal prison. I have only been employed with them for the last year and like any other organization they may experience some type of ethical issues. According to business dictionary, ethical issue is a “problem or situation which requires a person or organization to choose between alternatives that must be evaluated as right (ethically) or wrong (unethically). A good example of a common ethical problem in a business would be discrimination. According to Trevino and Nelson, “discrimination occurs whenever something other than qualifications affects how an employee is treated. Unequal treatment, usually unfavorable, can take many forms. Racial, ethnic, religious, or sexually stereotypes can creep into the behavior. Discrimination can be subtle or not subtle factor not only in working relationships, but also in hiring, promotions, and lay off decisions. People who do not fit a “corporate profile” may be passed over for advancement because they are female, or a member of a minority group, or too old. Discrimination is an ethical issue because it is at the core of fairness in the workplace. (Trevino&Nelson 2007).
