Terrorism in the Name of Religion is as old as time. We know it my other terms – Holy Wars or Fighting in the name of God. In this paper, I will attempt to define terrorism in the context of religion and what some of the warning signs are of religious terrorism.

What are Holy Wars? Is it a lot of fighting? If so, what is the fighting in the name of?

Terrorism in the Name of Religion has been around since the beginning of time. However, what

does religious terrorism truly means? First, I’ll start at the beginning by defining religion and

discuss the main categories. Second, cults and sects will be introduced, followed by terrorism

and where it originated from. Next, I’ll take a stab at defining religious terrorism and the

warning signs of such. Finally, I’ll conclude with my opinions on “Terrorism in the Name of

Religion”.

What is Religion? Merriam-Webster Online dictionary defines religion many ways. The

first reference explains the state of a religion <a nun in her 20th year of religion>; the service and

worship of God or the supernatural; and commitment or devotion to religious faith or

observance. The second refers religion to a personal set or institutionalized system of religious

attitudes, beliefs, and practices. The third discusses religion as archaic, very old, scrupulous

conformity. Finally, it’s referred to a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and

faith. O’Connor breaks down established religions in five different categories: Christianity;

Islam; Hinduism; Buddhism; Judaism; and describes the differences between them.

CHRISTIANITY: The most popular religion in the world (33%) and the one with the most historical record of violence, much of it in-fighting.
