Rising health care costs in the United States are causing individuals and employers to seek alternatives that will help control cost. Americans spend thousands and thousands of dollars each year on healthcare; they are trying to save some of that money. Many employers are switching to consumer-driven health (CDH) plans, which are known as high deductible plans.

A CDH plan gives members the opportunity to choose their own healthcare provider and allows them the use of personal health savings accounts (HSAs). Generally, individuals see this as helping them to save.
