A local physician yesterday, out of San Bernardino County noticed a drastic increase of patients coming in with symptoms of diarrhea, fever, vomiting and abdominal cramps. Researchers diagnosed the patients with Campylobacter Disease. It is a commonly known food-borne illness which anyone can be infected with. Most common in kids under the age of 5 and mature adults over the age of 60, especially people involved with farm animals or in the meat industry. Here are some ways that can help protect yourself and your loved ones from getting infected during this outbreak.

How do you get infected with Campylobacter and how to protect yourself?

Eating contaminated food is usually the most common way. Campylobacteriosis is most commonly found in raw meats and raw poultry. Although the appearance of the food would seem normal, there’s no way of telling which food item is contaminated or not. That is why proper storage and handling is very important. Avoid storing raw meats and cooked food together and avoid using the same surfaces and utensils when preparing food. All meat should be cooked thoroughly, especially chicken because it will get rid of any Campylobacter. Keep all kitchen utensils, clothes, plates clean especially when using them. Also don’t forget to properly seal and place in the fridge and left-over foods.

However, not all people prepare their own foods. We usually have to put our trust in the restaurants or chefs hands and pretty much hope you’re meal is not contaminated. That is why we civilians can practice some suggestions to avoid such infections. You can wash your hands with warm water and soap thoroughly before and after a meal, after using the restroom, and after touching pets or animals.
