Biography – Asa Candler

The entrepreneur that we have chosen as a group is a man known for not creating, but building one of the greatest and most recognizable brand names known to mankind. Coca Cola, and Asa Griggs Candler was the man behind this remarkable product. In this report we have researched how he started off in this career choice path, and what accomplishments he has made in making the Coca Cola soft drink what it is today. His aggressive marketing strategy has made a big impact on starting off his unique and refreshing soda drink.

Asa Griggs Candler was born on December 30th 1851, near Villa Rica, Georgia. (Anthony Hallett, 1997) He was born to Samuel Charles & Martha Beall Candler who had 11 children and they grew up on a farm to a very strict Christian family. Asa was born during a very complex and difficult time, the time when the civil war was going on. Many of the troops ended up destroying their family farm and their family store. During his high school years Asa wanted to study medicine but due to the family’s situation they simply could not afford to have him study the career of his choice.

In July of 1870 when Asa was 18 years of age he decided to become a doctor and had become an apprentice for 2 physicians in Cartersville Georgia. He would perform many tasks for the doctors during the day in their pharmacy store and also carry on studying Latin and Greek during the night where he stayed in a very small room close to his work in the pharmacy store (Anthony Hallett, 1997). He never really made much money working for the 2 doctors so after 3 years he decided to not become a doctor but instead decided to pack his bags and have the courage to move on to Atlanta for better opportunities and his ambitions of pursuing a career in Pharmacy.
