Multiparty Negotiations, Trust/Reputation

The first subject to address in this paper is how one would develop an effective negotiating team to work on multiparty negotiations and outline and explain the actions that would be effective. Next, a description of an event that would cause damage to the level of trust during negotiation will be explained and the actions a person would take to repair the trust and maintain positive relationships with the negotiating parties. Finally, this paper will detail an explanation as to why these actions would be effective.

Bruce Barry, Roy Lewicki, and David Saunders authors of Essentials of Negotiation (2007) stated multiparty negotiation looks a lot like group decision making because it involves a group of parties trying to reach a common solution in a situation where the parties ‘preferences may diverge (p. 215). The first step in developing an effective negotiating team to work on multiparty negotiations is to appoint a neutral chairperson. This will ensure an effective process. “The chairpersons of multiparty negotiations must be sensitive to keeping tight control over the group process while not directly affecting the group’s outcome” (Barry, et. al. 2007, p. 222). The first action that the chairperson needs to take is to explain the role to the group. The second step is to have an agenda that could be discussed, modified, or changed by all parties. Creating or modifying the agenda will help the parties to be clear on the goal. The third step is “make logistical arrangements that will help the negotiation process” (Barry, et. al. 2007, p. 222).
