Managing Diversity

Managing diversity is an on going process that unleashes the various talents and

capabilities which a diverse population brings to an organization, community or society. When managing diversity properly you will create a wholesome, inclusive environment that is safe for differences, enables people to reject rejection, celebrates diversity, and maximizes the full potential of all, in a cultural context where everyone benefits. In my research of the movie Freedom Writers I will explore culture issues, reasons for cultural problems, explain how this movie relates to my life and conclude whether or not the movie was realistic. I will then share my personal cultural background, going back two generations, major contributions from my lineage, major contribution from my ethnic group and what I think that could improve culture relations.

Erin is an ambitious twenty three year old teacher at the Wilson High School. Erin is faced by diversity in her class, however managing the diverse racial group from different backgrounds is her greatest challenge. Erin's students include Asians, African Americans, Latin Americans juvenile delinquents and even the poor students hoping to make it through the day. The common denominator with the students is their hate for each other and the fact that they feel like they are just trapped in this high school with each other. They can't wait to leave that place. Erin's students completely refuse to participate in her class, but she tries her best to engage them everyday by using a variety of techniques (Freedom Writer 1). She tried games, trips, and giving each student a journal to document their pain and struggles.

In my opinion the reason for the cultural problems in this movie stems from the ignorance of the student about other races. I also think that because all of the students have their own personal problems they are dealing...
