Check Point: Wireless Network Standards

What are the differences between these wireless LAN’s?

1.       802.11b: The frequency is far but not fast.  The applications that operate at a 2.4 GHz are accepted. Is very cheapest of the four because of its popularity of the 802.11g.  The fewer obstacles in between the two connections equal better web browsing.  It offers internet access only.

2.       802.11a: operates at a 5 GHz and used for crowded 2.4 GHz areas, it’s very fast but doesn’t travel very far. It’s used in building to building at long distances and wireless bridge connections. Has higher frequency and does not travel far without a high gain antenna.

3.       802.11g: This frequency is used for file transfers computer to computer at same 2.4 GHz frequency range.  Has a soft range top speed is 54mbps as opposed to 11mbps that we had with the b standard.  Mainly used for internet and file sharing.

4.       802.11n: have multiple inputs multiple outputs (MIMO) signal processing and have smart antenna technique for transmitting multiple data streams through multiple antennas. The results are 5 times the performance and twice the range compared to the earlier 802.11g standards.

Do you think standards are beneficial in the field of wireless networking?  I think that by looking at the old standards of the 802.11g and by merging the two standards make the speed faster and longer frequency because of the combination of the two standards.  The only downfall is if you merge g/b and have a compatible networking card you won’t have to change it, but if it’s not compatible you will have to change the network card to a compatible one. I think these networks are getting better by the day, and also faster. I think they are benificial to businesses with the speed and the range being better, and faster.
