Summary
Reactance is the opposition of a circuit element to a change of electric current or voltage due to that element's capacitance is called capacitive reactance. Capacitive reactance Xc is inversely proportional to the signal frequency and the capacitance. The formula for the capacitive reactance is:
Xc = -1/ῳC = -1/ 2πfC
* Capacitive reactance will decrease if there is an increase in frequency or an increase in capacitance. The symbol is Xc, and the units of the capacitive reactance is ohms which is same as the resistance.
* The current leads the voltage by 90° in a capacitor, opposite to the inductors as in the inductors the voltage lags by 90°.
Capacitive Reactance against Frequency
|
* When the value of the capacitive reactance is high at very low frequency values it acts as an open circuit.
* When the value of the capacitive reactance is low at the very high frequency values it acts as a short circuit.
* As we shown in the graph the capacitive reactance is inversely proportional to the frequency.
