This article mainly talks about the advantages and disadvantages of a portable GPS that are usually used by civlians like travelers, seamen and even everyday working people. Its advantages include effortlessly finding your way to your destinations, easily finding specific locations and having to navigate over water without the use of a map and compass. Being able to navigate easily, users will not have to be concerned with getting lost since GPS gives exact and detailed directions to the user. The area search functions as an advantages because if you are in need of a hotel, restaurant or a gas station , the GPS will be able to find it for you. This is most helpful especially if you are in an unfamiliar area. On the other hand, the disadvantages are having the possibility of signal loss due to surrounding high buildings and other hindrances. The GPS signals or directions can also become imprecise because of the same reasons.

This book mainly talks about the historical background of the GPS and how it started off in 1982. Although satellite-based positioning has been pursued since 1960’s, the GPS made its debut in 1982. It was tested and developed repeatedly at M.I.T. that verified the GPS surveying accuracy of 1-2 parts per million. This was done by several hours of observation, which also helped in gaining experience with the new technology. In 1984, the GPS was used at Stanford University to support the construction for extending Stanford’s Leaner Accelerator by conducting a high-precision GPS engineering survey. And by the middle of 1984 the GPS had been demonstrated beyond any doubt. All aspects of the GPS has become close to perfect at the time and improved immensely.
