Media/Personal Examples

Media Example 1 – Underoath published an album called the “Act of Depression” and on that album was a song with the same name. Only two thousand of these albums were released in 1999. This song is about the act of bullying, which led to depression and then later on, suicide. The lyrics “Kids finding laughter at my expense, they were killing me on the inside, they couldn’t give up their pride” clearly showed where bullying was involved. Bullying is a serious thing, which leads to serious problems like depression.

Media Example 2 – In 2001, a movie called “A Beautiful Mind” came out in theaters. This movie told a story about a young boy, John Nash, who developed paranoid schizophrenia and had delusional episodes as he watched the burden that he was putting on his wife and family. Paranoid schizophrenia is one out of the six psychotic disorders that are characterized by psychosis, hallucinations and delusions. Some symptoms include hearing voices, which John Nash experienced, disorganized speech and disorganized behavior.

Media Example 3 – On the TV show “Monk” the character Adrian Monk suffers from Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder. Though Monk is a fictional character he suffers from a disorder that nearly six million other Americans do as well. Monk suffers from not only ODC but different phobias too. People with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder experience unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings and ideas that lead them to do something compulsive, hence the name.

Media Example 4 – While watching TV, I noticed an example of the Foot-in-the-door-phenomenon in one of the commercials. Instead of using fliers or other ways of advertising, they were trying to solicit subscribers to their station. The foot-in-the-door technique involves first getting a person to agree to a modest request, which in this case is when they ask their viewers to make a commitment and call them.
