Problem-Solving Simulation

How did you interpret the problem?

First I read over it and evaluated the issue at hand. The man needed to cross the river with his 3 animals. Then I looked deeper and saw the issues with crossing the river, the raft only could carry himself and one other animal at a time. In this, the 3 animals had issues with being left with one another, only the mouse and the dog could be left alone together without causing harm to one another. I had to take into consideration getting all three animals and the man safely across the river without jeopardizing a fellow pet’s life.

What strategy did you use and how did you evaluate your progress?

I first brought the cat over. Then I brought the raft back and grabbed the mouse. When I got the mouse to the other end, I brought the cat back to the right side and switched him out for the dog. Once I had the mouse and dog safely together on the left side of the river, I was able to go back and save the cat. It was a pretty easy strategy, and evaluating my progress was as simple as knowing that I was doing well keeping each enemy separated, and not losing any pets as I got to the other side of the river.

Did you encounter any problems while solving the problem?

No, I did not encounter any problems while solving this problem. By evaluating the problem prior to actually putting a plan into motion, I was able to swiftly and safely solve the issue at hand. It would have caused an issue if I had just skimmed through the brief overview as then I wouldn’t have known that the cat and mouse could not be left alone, and the cat and dog could not be left alone. I would have just brought them over one at a time only to find myself pet-less for not paying attention. It’s a good thing that there was no designated limit on how many trips the raft could take!
