Professional Values and Ethics

I find it rather easy to portray a businessman. Being bland, rather cruel and incompetent comes naturally to me – John Cleese.

The business world is most obviously about as cutthroat a world as a person can find. Someone who wants to succeed in business has to focus, be relentless, and willing to take any risk necessary. Therefore, the aspiring executive can lose himself in his power like the above quote reads. A person with the goal of success has to employ methods of professional values and ethics and by doing these things the person will without a doubt enjoy the fruits of his or her labor and definite career success.

Values and Ethics

According to Bloomsbury Guide to Human Thought (1993), the concept of values is a term used by social scientists to refer to generalized, abstract ideas held by human individuals or groups about what is desirable, proper, good, or bad. Culture and society play a major role in what each individual values. Values help people determine what is more important or less important when making decisions. When working in the professional world everyone must take into consideration that another person’s values may not be the same as our own, even if the two people hold the same position in the company. Values can be put into a number of different categories such as personal values and social values. According to Syque, 2010, people take personal values for themselves, and when we were young social values were probably instilled into us.

According to Syque, 2010, ethics is a theory or a system of moral values, or the rules or standards governing the conduct of a person or the members of a profession. Ethics are a set of rules that are accepted by a group of people. According to the Encyclopedia of Ethics (2001), problems in professional ethics typically arise when the values dominant within particular professions come into conflict with other values in the course of practice.
