The main duty of tactical leaders is to create and maintain the organizational characteristics that reward and encourage joint effort. The most important characteristic of an organization is organizational culture. Starbuck’s mission statement states that the company wants” to inspire and nurture the human spirit-one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.” (Starbuck, 2011)

Starbucks formed in 1971 in Seattle, Washington as a manufacturer of whole bean and ground coffee.  Starbucks expansion occurred in the 1990s and today Starbuck is the largest coffeehouse in the world. The company has more than 16,000 locations in more than 50 countries. “Organizational culture refers to a system of shared meaning held by members that distinguishes the organization from other organizations.” (Robbins & Judge, p 573, 2007). The way the organization values shape behavior determines the operations. Starbuck regards the company as the most successful coffee chain in the nation and has gained notoriety in every part of American society. Starbuck had to train and hire people who would meet expectations of the customers. Starbuck’s culture consists of support and respect, accepting diversity, training, and educating the employees. The company provides a comfortable atmosphere in every store. The company gives fair pricing and contributes to the community. Starbuck maintains a high standard for company products. The company can continue the quality operations compared to the competition. “We’re called partners, because it’s not just a job, it’s our passion. Together, we embrace diversity to create a place where each of us can be ourselves. We always treat each other with respect and dignity. And we hold each other to that standard.” (Starbucks, 2011)
