Employment is no longer about just having a job. The employer / employee relationship has changed over the last 20 years. People tend to take jobs for various reasons, but the most blaring reason is what can this job do for me. Employee’s are no longer servants to a big corporation. In today’s job world, employers and employees must work together to achieve a common goal of success. With each job there is a level of intrinsic and extrinsic rewards the people seek. Job can offer many different rewards, but it is up to the employees to determine if the rewards are satisfactory and serve as a motivational tool. If employees were to change the types of rewards within their company, what would they be changed to. In the corporate world, the company must also value the changes and must also find satisfaction.

The federal government employs hundreds of thousands of workers across the country. Many people work for the government because of the extrinsic rewards that are offered. While the pay at the start of one’s career in the government can be well below the average pay in the private sector, the other benefits offered and the rate of pay with tenure increases the desire to work for the government. The health benefits for government workers are some of the best available. There are also insurance benefits that come with being a federal worker. Along with health insurance, government workers are able to buy into a life insurance program at a discounted rate, an additional government life insurance policy is a benefit, a pension plan is established once workers reach five years of service, and a retirement plan is set up that the both the employee and the government contribute to.
